Mountain View School in Māngere Bridge had to close its doors after a substantial fire that took place on Thursday morning. The fire, which involved multiple houses on Coronation Road, prompted the closure of the school due to concerns about potential asbestos exposure resulting from the burning buildings. Fire and Emergency New Zealand received numerous calls about multiple houses engulfed in flames on Coronation Road at around 2:58 am. A firefighter on-site mentioned that the fire affected five structures, including an older building where asbestos exposure might be a risk due to its age. Public health officials from Te Whatu Ora were evaluating the asbestos risk to the local community following the fire's extinguishment. A coroner determined that a man's passing was directly attributed to prolonged exposure to hazardous asbestos over his 32-year professional tenure.   As per a report published in BBC , David Mills, of The Causeway in Quedgeley, was diagnosed with asbestos-related lung cancer in 2020. He reported regularly coming into contact with the fibrous material at Royal Mail post office sites while working as an electrician. A coroner ruled his cause of death was "industrial disease" after he passed away on 30 November this year, aged 71. Mr Mills first began working for South West Post (later taken over by Romec Ltd) in 1979 and his duties included electrical maintenance and installation. Many Royal Mail sites where he worked, including Tewkesbury, Ross on Wye and Gloucester, were undergoing refits at the time and asbestos was present in ceiling and roof tiles, panels and fuse boxes. Sealord Neglects Responsibility for Staff Exposed to Asbestos In New Zealand

A hefty bill has been sent to a major fishing company after it exposed its staff to asbestos .  Sealord, one of the largest fishing companies in the Southern Hemisphere, was ordered to pay two victims $3000 each in reparation, fined $257,250, and ordered to pay $28,987 in costs to Maritime NZ, in the Nelson District Court on Tuesday. Maritime NZ had investigated after asbestos was found on board the Will Watch, a Cook Islands-flagged ship owned by Sealord’s overseas subsidiary United Fame Investments. Aotearoa-based employees were seconded to work on the ship in Mauritius. Maritime NZ’s general manager investigations Pete Dwen said the workers were still subject to the terms and conditions of their employment agreement with Sealord, which made Sealord responsible for the safety of its workers. Senior staff members of Sealord had monitored the vessel’s health and safety operations and gave input on operating procedures, which should have identified the issues with the asbestos. H
